This was our show mantel for years. It shows a full surround with carving on the mantel shelf and the pilasters.
The picture is our house with the black dogs we are named for and the dogwoods that surround our house.
This shows a possible application with a wood stove, where often you are limited on depth because you must stay a certain distance from the chimney pipe.
This is an example of a carving inset within the stone surround. I would love to do one like this using an irregular shape rather than a rectangle.
This carving is done on a beam that is placed on a stone surround. If you want a carving on a beam you must realize that the beam will split and crack as it is heated and cooled over time.
This mantel was simply attached over an existed, very small brick ledge. I t was attached in such a way that when the owners moved they could take it with them.
This mantel is made in the Arts and Crafts style. This basic style is $200 a running foot in Oak and $225 in Walnut, Cherry or Maple.
This mantel is in a very tradtional style. There are a number of molding possiblilites. This one uses dental molding in contrasting woods. It also shows the option of having a marquetry picture instead of carving. Marquetry generally adds about $25 per foot to the price over carving. This style is about $175 per foot with carving. The price can be more or less depending on the amount of molding you prefer.
This is an example of a fake beam. It is just a hollow box, making it much less likely to crack and easier to hang. Fake beams run $100 per foot in Oak and $125 in other woods. Please note that some woods are not great for carving. We can always use something like poplar that can be made to look like the wood used on the top, bottom, and sides of the box.
